The two Moroccan cities as well as 53 other cities, which have just joined this network, were distinguished for the place given to culture and creativity in their development strategies and for their innovative practices in urban planning focused around human, specifies UNESCO in a press release.
Casablanca thus becomes a Creative City in the field of digital arts, thanks to the abundance of initiatives that exist there, while Ouarzazate becomes a Creative City in the Film category.
“The cities in our Creative Cities Network are at the forefront of access to culture and mobilizing creativity for resilience and urban development,” said Audrey Azoulay, Director General of the Creative Cities Network. UNESCO, cited in the press release.
“I would like to warmly congratulate the cities of Casablanca and Ouarzazate, which have just been designated UNESCO Creative Cities and will now be able to proudly display this international label,” rejoiced, for his part, Eric Falt, Regional Director of UNESCO Office for the Maghreb.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was established in 2004 to promote cooperation between cities around the world that have identified creativity as a strategic factor in sustainable urban development.
With these 55 new members, the Network now has 350 cities in more than a hundred countries, covering seven creative fields: crafts and popular arts, digital arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature and music.
The newly designated cities will work with Network members to increase their resilience to the challenges of climate change, rising inequalities, and rapid urbanization, with 68% of the world’s population expected to live in urban areas. by 2050, notes the press release.
