Casablanca-Settat: an “exceptional” agricultural season due to low rainfall

Casablanca – The 2023-2024 agricultural season in the Casablanca-Settat region is of an “exceptional” nature due to certain constraints linked mainly to low rainfall.

An observation made by the regional director of agriculture in the Casablanca-Settat region, Hssain Rahaoui during a meeting organized Thursday evening in El Jadida by the Casablanca-Settat Regional Chamber of Agriculture, before indicating that the rainfall as of February 15, showed a drop of around 54% compared to the annual average during a normal season (226 mm) and 41% compared to the previous year.

Supporting figures, he indicated that the rainfall amounts to only 104 mm to date compared to 176 mm during the 2022-2023 agricultural season.

Concerning water resources in the Casablanca-Settat region, Mr. Rahaoui noted the low filling rate of the Al Massira and El Hansali dams as well as in terms of groundwater.

Faced with this situation, measures have been taken including the program of crops irrigated by private pumping, he said, also mentioning the impact of the international situation on prices and the cost of agricultural production.

And to estimate that the appropriate implementation of the measures taken by the government is able to mitigate the unfortunate consequences of this situation and their impact on farmers and consumers.
