Catalonia’s universities are increasingly recognized on the world stage, with ten degree programs now ranking among the top 50 globally, according to the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject. This strong showing—six from public universities and four from private institutions—highlights the region’s commitment to academic excellence and research, attracting international students and bolstering Spain’s overall position in higher education. The rankings, which assess 1,912 universities worldwide, consider academic reputation, research impact, and employer feedback, offering a comprehensive view of program quality.
The QS World University Rankings have been a key resource for prospective students since 2011, providing a subject-specific guide to the world’s leading institutions. This year’s results demonstrate a particularly robust performance from Catalan public universities, signaling their ability to compete effectively with established global leaders. Beyond the headline numbers, the rankings reveal a diverse range of strengths across multiple disciplines, with programs spanning architecture, veterinary science, economics, medicine, library science, linguistics, and business administration all earning top marks. This breadth of excellence is distributed across seven different campuses throughout Catalonia, showcasing a widespread commitment to quality education.
Catalan Universities Shine in Key Disciplines
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) leads the way, with its architecture program securing the 19th position globally. This represents a significant jump of 19 places from the 2024 rankings, overcoming what the university described as one of its historically worst performances. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) also performs strongly, with its veterinary science program ranked 25th worldwide and its linguistics program landing at 49th. The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) earns recognition for its economics program, placing 31st globally, and is considered ninth in Europe for the discipline. Meanwhile, the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) secures positions for its medicine (44th) and library science (41st) programs.
Eulalia Gómez Escoda, director of the UPC’s School of Architecture, attributes the program’s success to a unique model that integrates academic research with practical application. “The outstanding position of UPC Architecture is based on a public school model where the articulation of project workshops and urban planning as critical laboratories allows for a complex dialogue on contemporary issues at various scales—from material to territory—and supported by excellence,” she said. This emphasis on a hands-on, research-driven approach appears to be a key differentiator for the program.
Private Institutions Contribute to Catalan Success
Catalonia’s private universities are also making their mark. The Escuela Culinaria de San Pol de Mar stands out with a remarkable 14th-place ranking in culinary arts. The Ramon Llull University (URL), a federation of universities including Esade, IQS, Blanquerna, and La Salle, achieves strong results in business-related fields, with its business administration program ranking 18th and its marketing program at 19th. The Universidad Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) earns a place in the top 50 with its dentistry program, ranking 36th globally and second in Spain, trailing only the Complutense University of Madrid. Elisabet Golobardes, the URL’s vice-rector for academic organization and quality, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the university’s success. “From the Ramon Llull University federation, we work intensely on the different missions of the university—academic, research, knowledge transfer, and social commitment—and we do so collaboratively between all the institutions that integrate the URL. This joint effort is reflected in international rankings like QS.”
Veterinary Science and Medicine Lead the Way
The UAB’s veterinary science program is particularly noteworthy, achieving the 25th position globally and earning the distinction of being the top-ranked veterinary program in Spain and eighth in Europe. Dean Manel López Béjar credits the program’s sustained success to “the solidity of the academic and scientific project sustained over time, based on the quality of research, teaching excellence, and a growing international projection.”
The UB’s medical program, encompassing the faculties of Clínic and Bellvitge, has also seen significant improvement, climbing 12 places to 44th in the world. It now ranks alongside institutions like the University of São Paulo and the University of California, Berkeley. The program’s Dean, Antoni Trilla, attributes this progress to the dedication of researchers, doctors, and professors, and the integration of research, teaching, and clinical practice. “The harmonious integration between research, teaching and clinical practice is an essential pillar of our model,” he stated.
The rankings also highlight the growing strength of library science at the UB, which moved from the 51-100 range in 2024 to 41st globally this year. Dean Miquel Termens points to the program’s increasing internationalization and impact in areas like bibliometrics and open science as key factors in its success.
Looking ahead, these rankings underscore Catalonia’s growing prominence as a hub for higher education. The continued investment in research, coupled with a commitment to international collaboration, positions Catalan universities for further success in the years to come.
