Houston, TX – The Cleveland Cavaliers suffered a resounding 117-100 defeat at the hands of the Houston Rockets on Saturday at the Toyota Center, a jarring setback after a promising showing over the holiday.

Rockets Overpower Cavaliers Despite Key Absence

The Houston Rockets, playing without Alperen Sengun, dominated the Cleveland Cavaliers, building a lead as large as 31 points in a game that quickly slipped away from the visiting team.

  • The Rockets led 32-24 at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to 60-46 by halftime.
  • Cleveland Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson expressed extreme disappointment with his team’s performance, particularly their physicality and readiness.
  • Young players Jaylon Tyson, Tyrese Proctor, and Thomas Bryant received praise from Atkinson for their effort and grit.
  • Star players Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland struggled, scoring 16 and 12 points respectively.

The Rockets established control early, leading 32-24 after the first quarter and pushing their advantage to 60-46 at halftime. While the Cavaliers weren’t entirely out of contention at the break, a disastrous third quarter extinguished any hopes of a comeback, turning the contest into a lopsided affair.

Following the game, Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson delivered a scathing critique of his team’s performance. He admitted he was surprised by the stark contrast between this game and their recent performance against the New York Knicks on Christmas Day.

“I rarely say this, but I thought the game was over in the first quarter,” Atkinson stated. “I think we had 8 turnovers. Their physicality ruined us, we weren’t ready tonight. I don’t know how else to say it. I was so encouraged after the game against the Knicks, but tonight I don’t know. Call it what you want, maybe Christmas hangover, I have no idea. It’s hard to explain it. It wasn’t the same team that played the other night against the Knicks. Obviously, they outplayed us physically, and I didn’t like our response.”

Atkinson’s frustration appeared to be directed primarily at his veteran players, while he offered words of encouragement for the younger members of the team.

“I must say that I really appreciated the response of our young people,” he declared. “Jaylon Tyson, Tyrese Proctor, Thomas Bryant. There I saw the grit. Jaylon was our lighthouse. This is how you have to play. He was ready and after the meeting I highlighted him. I said that’s what we needed.”

The Cavaliers’ struggles extended to their starting lineup, with few players delivering strong performances. Donovan Mitchell finished with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Darius Garland managed only 12 points and an assist, while Sam Merrill surprisingly outscored him with 13 points. Dean Wade and Jarrett Allen each contributed 6 points.

When questioned about potentially benching his underperforming starters, Atkinson responded candidly, stating, “When I think about it, I probably should have replaced them sooner. Criticize me for this. I could have replaced them and given a chance to the boys who deserve to play.”
