The Electronic Media Council will elect the chairman of the media regulator today. His mandate will be one year.
The term of office of the previous chairman, Sonja Momchilova, expires at the end of this month.
Sonia Momchilova was elected as the chairman of the Electronic Media Council for two consecutive terms. According to the Radio and Television Act, the chairman is elected by the members of the regulator by a two-thirds majority vote.
The chairman of the media regulator represents the Council, convenes and directs its meetings, maintains relations with state authorities and media service providers, as well as with international organizations in the field of media services, and issues penal decrees for violations of legal provisions.
The SEM has five members – three are elected by the National Assembly and two are appointed by the president.
Sonia Momchilova and Gabriela Naplatanova are now from the presidential quota, and Galina Georgieva, Simona Veleva and Prolet Velkova from the parliamentary quota, reports BGNES.
