Arctic Blast Grips Central North Carolina: Cold Weather Advisory in Effect

A dangerous surge of arctic air has descended upon Central North Carolina, driving temperatures into the teens and creating wind chills in the single digits as of Monday morning, December 15, 2025. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions against cold exposure as a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday.

Dangerous Wind Chills and Hazardous Conditions

The National Weather Service reports that the current cold snap poses significant risks to health and safety. In addition to the frigid temperatures, gusty northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with peak gusts reaching 35 mph, are exacerbating the cold. These strong winds present a hazard, potentially sending unsecured objects – including holiday decorations – airborne.

“These conditions can quickly lead to hypothermia and frostbite if proper precautions aren’t taken,” a senior weather official stated.

Safety Measures to Protect Yourself and Others

Authorities are emphasizing the importance of proactive safety measures. Residents are advised to:

  • Dress in layers, including hats and gloves, to trap body heat.
  • Ensure children are adequately protected from the cold with appropriate clothing.
  • Keep pets indoors whenever possible, and provide outdoor animals with a warm, dry shelter, food, and access to unfrozen water.
  • Regularly check on older family members, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the cold.
  • Use portable heaters safely and strictly avoid using generators or grills indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

A Brief Respite on the Horizon

Fortunately, the extreme cold is not expected to last. Sunny and milder weather is forecast for Tuesday, initiating a gradual warming trend throughout the week. High temperatures are predicted to reach the mid-60s by Thursday.

While a chance of showers is anticipated late Thursday night into early Friday morning, temperatures will remain above freezing, meaning any precipitation will fall as rain.
