Cesena Launches Interactive Road Accident Dashboard for enhanced Safety & Transparency

The Municipality of cesena has unveiled a new, interactive online dashboard providing a comprehensive view of road accidents within the city, offering data stretching back to 1998 and updated through 2024. This innovative tool aims to foster transparency, support data-driven decision-making, and encourage public participation in improving road safety.

A Detailed Look at Cesena’s Road Safety Landscape

As of December 2024, the dashboard reveals 742 accidents occurred in cesena, resulting in 521 injuries and, tragically, 8 fatalities. The initiative is designed to make data readily accessible to residents, to provide administrators and policymakers with concrete tools for targeted interventions, and to empower citizens to engage in informed discussions about local road safety. “This isn’t simply an archive of numbers,” stated a senior official, “but an operational support channel at all levels.”

Collaborative Effort & Past Data

The new dashboard is the product of a collaborative effort between the Cesena Statistics Service, the SIT (Information Systems Service), and the Mobility Services, building on detailed accident surveys conducted since 2005. This work is conducted in close partnership with the Cesena Police Force and the Local Police, leveraging data collected as 1998.

Over the past 26 years, from 1998 to 2024, Cesena has recorded 23,916 accidents, with 13,499 resulting in injuries and 239 fatalities. The 2024 data indicates 1,375 vehicles were involved in the 742 reported accidents.

Identifying High-Risk Areas & Times

Analysis of the data reveals that major thoroughfares like Via Emilia Levante, the Ravennate, and the Secante (Via Ugo La Malfa) experience a disproportionately high number of accidents. However, these roads account for less than 30% of all incidents citywide, suggesting that accident hotspots are distributed across the Cesenate area rather than concentrated in specific zones. The busiest urban areas generally see more accidents, with exceptions in districts like Cervese Nord, Dismano, Ravennate, and Rubicone, which have lower population densities.

Peak accident times occur at 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with 61 and 64 incidents respectively.

Trends & Pandemic Impact

The total number of accidents declined substantially after 2002, likely coinciding with the introduction of a points-based driving license system. From 2005 to 2019, accident numbers remained relatively stable. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 led to a considerable reduction in travel and, consequently, accidents. Since 2022,accidents have begun to rise again, though not to the levels seen in the preceding two decades. Interestingly, the 2024 data shows a decrease in total accidents, a trend that requires further monitoring in the coming years to determine its sustainability.

It’s notable to note that the data reflects only incidents reported to law enforcement – specifically, the 687 handled by the Local Police, 29 by the State Police, and 26 by the carabinieri – excluding those resolved through citizen-led “Friendly Findings” or minor incidents.

Vehicle Types & Vulnerable Road Users

Cars are involved in the majority of accidents. Though, bicycles accounted for 112 accidents, motorcycles for 101, and trucks for 95, highlighting the vulnerability of these road users. pedestrians were involved in 50 accidents, and mopeds in 37.A further 39 accidents involved less common vehicles like scooters, tractors, and buses.

Over the last decade, two-wheeled vehicles have proven to be the most dangerous mode of transport. In terms of fatalities,Cervese Nord has experienced the highest number with 12 deaths, followed by Centro Urbano and Fiorenzuola (both with 7),and Oltre Savio (with 6). Cesuola stands out as the safest neighborhood, with zero deaths recorded in the last ten years. Urban neighborhoods consistently report higher accident rates, led by the Urban Center, Oltre Savio, Fiorenzuola, and southern Cervese, while Borello reports the fewest accidents.

By providing this level of detail, the Cesena Municipality aims to create a safer and more sustainable transportation environment for all its residents.
