With 68 votes in favor, 39 against and 5 abstentions, the Chamber of Deputies generally approved the project that decriminalizes the self-cultivation of marijuana and allows its private consumption for medicinal and recreational purposes.

The initiative, which will return to the Health Commission for new indications, modifies the Health Code and Law 20,000, which replaces Law 19,366, which sanctions Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.

Likewise, the rule allows the carrying of quantities of less than ten grams of any species, subspecies or variety of dried flowering tops without additives of the cannabis plant species. However, carrying larger amounts or carried by minors will be punished.

Meanwhile, a maximum of six plants will be allowed to be grown at home, and people who need to consume marijuana for medicinal purposes must have a medical prescription from a doctor, which does not require a specialty.
