Shakhtar Donetsk is finally fixed! One month before the start of the competition (September 19), the reigning Ukrainian champion announced on Friday that he will play his “home” matches of the Champions League group stage in the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg , in northern Germany.

Home to HSV, a historic German football club currently in the 2nd division, the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg has a capacity of more than 50,000 seats. Last season, HSV recorded an average of 53,500 spectators. The stadium will also host matches of the next European Nations Championship (from June 14 to July 14, 2024).

Shakhtar Donetsk had already been forced into exile last season due to the war of invasion of Ukraine launched by Russia on February 24, 2022. The former winner of the UEFA Cup (2008-2009 ) had then played his matches “at home” in Warsaw, on the lawn of Legia.

In a stadium that can hold 31,800 spectators, Shakhtar’s three Champions League group stage matches against Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Celtic, had averaged more than 25,000 spectators. The Ukrainian club also played two Europa League games against Rennes (play-offs) and Feyenoord Rotterdam (round of 16).

“First, we would like to thank Warsaw and the Polish people for their support they have shown us during the European Cup matches,” Dmytro Kyrylenko, the Ukrainian club’s commercial director, said in the statement.

“We are sure that the matches in the Volksparkstadion will take place at the highest level, with local football fans, but also thousands of Ukrainians currently living temporarily in Germany and other European countries,” added the manager.
