Austrian Chancellor Stocker Confirms Intent to Remain in Office, Addresses Political Challenges

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has affirmed his commitment to leading the country through the next National Council election, dismissing discussions about his succession for the time being. The announcement comes as his governing coalition faces declining approval ratings and ongoing political scrutiny.
Return to Office Following Back Surgery
Stocker recently resumed his duties after a four-week recovery from back surgery, necessitated by a narrowing of the spine that caused him severe pain for a year. He reports being “completely pain-free” and experiencing a “completely new attitude to life.” During his convalescence, the Chancellor remained engaged, working from home, holding phone calls, and meeting with staff. He now commutes daily between Wiener Neustadt and Vienna.
Political Landscape and Upcoming Elections
The Chancellor intends to lead the ÖVP (Austrian People’s Party) as its top candidate in the upcoming National Council election. “This task fills me with great joy,” Stocker stated in a recent interview with the Kronen Zeitung. However, current polling data presents a challenge, with the governing parties – ÖVP, SPÖ, and Neos – losing ground to the FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria).
“Certainly no cause for celebration” are the current surveys, according to Stocker. He acknowledged that recent events involving the Chamber of Commerce have negatively impacted public trust in the People’s Party. Despite this, he views fluctuations in government approval as typical during times of crisis and expressed his determination to “lead the country through this time with the right decisions.”
Addressing Opposition and Internal Stability
Stocker was critical of the FPÖ, asserting that the party promotes divisive rhetoric and offers simplistic solutions. He specifically labeled the record of FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl as Interior Minister as “disastrous.”
However, these remarks drew a swift response from the FPÖ. Michael Schnedlitz, the party’s Secretary General, characterized Stocker’s statements as a “panicked diversionary tactic” and accused the Chancellor of spreading “fairy tales and lies” about the only politician representing the interests of Austrians.
Stocker also moved to quell speculation about a potential return of former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz to the political arena, dismissing such talk as originating from the “rumor mill.”
Economic Goals and Future Vision
Looking ahead, Stocker outlined his vision for Austria, emphasizing a desire for a “leaner, more efficient state” with a “solid budget, more economic growth, less inflation and hopefully more happiness.” He expressed his “will to shape this country” and improve the lives of its citizens.
