The Indian spacecraft “Chandrayan-3”, consisting of a landing stage and a lunar rover descending on it, sent images of the far side of the moon. They were published by the Indian Space Research Organization on its Twitter page.
The other side of the satellite used to be often called the “dark side of the moon”, but this name is incorrect – sunlight hits it. Nevertheless, it is impossible to see part of the satellite’s surface from the Earth’s surface: this is due to the fact that the period of the Moon’s rotation around our planet and the period of its rotation around its axis almost coincide. Since the satellite moves faster near the perigee, slower near the apogee, at different times it still turns out to be at different angles of the Earth, but until the middle of the last century, mankind did not have the opportunity to see almost half of its surface.
Chandrayaan 3 is scheduled to land on the moon on August 23rd.
