New Delhi: Who will be the Congress’ Chief Ministerial candidate in next month’s Punjab Assembly elections? Is it the current Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi or PCC President Navjot Singh Sidhu? The most eager question in the election are likely to be answered in a day or two. Discussions on this are progressing under the leadership of Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Sources said that the party has sought the views of members through the ‘Shakti’ app and the talks are in the final stages. She said that at present Channi is the most likely candidate and efforts are on for Sidhu. It is learned that Charanjit Channi will be contesting from two constituencies soon after the announcement of his candidature.

Earlier, it was announced on Sunday that Channi would contest in Badaur constituency in addition to Chamkaur Sahib. This is to ensure the success of the Chief Ministerial candidate.

The agreement was reached as part of Rahul Gandhi’s intervention to resolve the war between Channi and Sidhu. Although Rahul has assured both of them that he will give his full support to whomever he decides, the possibility of an infighting within the party after the announcement cannot be ruled out.

The High Command is trying to reconcile the two in a state where it is likely to retain power. Punjab will go to the polls on February 20. The results will be announced on March 10.
