Parolin will be in Westminster Abbey, the first time since the Reformation

The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Peter Parolino, will lead the delegation which, on behalf of the Pope, will participate today in the coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen consort of the United Kingdom. It is the first papal delegation to a coronation ceremony of the British monarchy since the Reformation 500 years ago.

Parolin will be accompanied by the new apostolic nuncio to Great Britain, archbishop Miguel Maury Buendìa. Both will be seated inside Westminster Abbey, which is new. This was underlined by the Spanish media ‘La Gaceta’.

During the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, papal representatives stood outside Westminster Abbey due to regulations then expressly forbidding Catholics from attending non-Catholic services, although they did watch the procession going in and out of the building ecclesiastical. In this regard, the then Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Bernard Griffin, neither attended the ceremony nor stayed outside the Abbey. However, he celebrated a mass for the new queen in Westminster Cathedral on the eve of her coronation.

Catholics were not permitted to attend non-Catholic services in churches. This ban was lifted thanks to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council and was finally included in the ecumenical directory of the Holy See in 1993. The Archbishop of Westminster will not only be inside the Abbey, but will give a blessing to the newly crowned king.
