OpenAI Sets 2026 Launch for ‘Adult Mode’ in ChatGPT, Prioritizing User Safety

OpenAI has announced plans to introduce a long-anticipated “Adult Mode” for ChatGPT in the first quarter of 2026, finally addressing years of criticism regarding the chatbot’s restrictive content policies. The update, revealed during a briefing on the GPT-5.2 model, signals a significant shift in the company’s approach to mature content, but one heavily conditioned on robust age verification measures.

For years, ChatGPT has faced scrutiny for its limitations when handling topics considered mature, including sexuality and adult-oriented discussions. While these safeguards were implemented to ensure user safety, many adult users have expressed frustration, finding the chatbot “less useful” or “less enjoyable” due to the constraints.

The forthcoming Adult Mode aims to rectify this by enabling more open and nuanced conversations, including the potential for erotica and less filtered language, but exclusively for verified adult users. However, according to OpenAI, the primary challenge isn’t the creation of the content itself, but rather preventing access by minors.

Age Verification: The Core Obstacle

Before Adult Mode can be deployed, OpenAI must establish a reliable system for confirming user age. A senior official stated that the company’s “top priority is accuracy,” emphasizing the need to avoid both incorrectly flagging adults as underage and, more critically, allowing minors to bypass the system.

Currently, OpenAI is in the initial testing phase of an age prediction model. This system leverages artificial intelligence to analyze user behavior and estimate age, moving beyond simple age confirmation checkboxes. Testing is already underway in select countries to assess the model’s ability to accurately identify teenage users while minimizing false positives among adults.

In certain regions, OpenAI may also integrate government ID verification through third-party services, providing an additional layer of security where legally required.

Opt-In System and Continued Safeguards

Importantly, Adult Mode will not be activated by default. Users will be required to explicitly opt-in and successfully complete the age verification process to unlock the feature. Teen users will continue to operate under the existing, stricter safety protocols and content limitations.

OpenAI emphasizes that this cautious approach is essential given the inherent risks. Traditional age verification methods have frequently proven ineffective in preventing minors from accessing explicit content online, and the company is determined to avoid repeating those failures.

One analyst noted that the company is walking a tightrope, balancing user demand for greater freedom with its ethical obligations to protect vulnerable individuals.

If all goes according to plan, ChatGPT will feature Adult Mode in early 2026. We hope OpenAI takes the necessary steps to ensure that it’s used in the way it should be.
