Delhi Man Uses ChatGPT to Turn the Tables on ‘Army Transfer’ Scammer

A Delhi resident ingeniously leveraged the power of artificial intelligence to track down and confront a scammer who was impersonating a college senior in an elaborate fraud. The man, sharing his experience on the Reddit forum r/delhi, detailed how he used ChatGPT to dismantle the scammer’s operation, which centered around a false promise of discounted goods from an alleged “Army transfer.”

The scam began on Facebook, where the perpetrator posed as a former college peer now working as an IAS officer. According to the man’s account, the scammer claimed a friend in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was being transferred and needed to quickly sell off high-end furniture and appliances at significantly reduced prices. Suspicious of the offer, the man proactively contacted the purported CRPF officer via WhatsApp, immediately uncovering the deception.

From Suspicion to Pursuit: Locating the Scammer

The scammer persisted, sending photos of the furniture and requesting payment through a QR code linked to a profile featuring an Army uniform. This escalation prompted the man to take a more active role in pursuing the fraudster. He noted that the scammer’s repeated insistence on urgent payment “felt immediately wrong,” and that the tone shifted to increased pressure once money was mentioned.

Instead of sending funds, the man employed ChatGPT to create a sophisticated trap. He instructed the AI to generate a seemingly legitimate payment webpage, but one designed to secretly capture the scammer’s geolocation, IP address, and a photograph from the device’s front-facing camera. “I fed the AI a prompt for a simple, functional webpage,” he explained, noting that the model produced the necessary code within minutes.

AI-Powered Counterattack and Scammer’s Plea

After hosting the tracker page, the man shared the link with the scammer, falsely claiming it was necessary to “expedite the payment process.” The scammer took the bait, unwittingly revealing his precise location, IP address, and a “shockingly clear” image of himself. In a dramatic turn, the man then sent the scammer his own picture and location details.

Within moments, the man received a barrage of calls from the scammer, using multiple phone numbers, and a desperate plea for forgiveness. Screenshots shared on Reddit documented the scammer’s panicked state, begging to be spared and promising to abandon his fraudulent activities. “He started pleading, saying he would ‘abandon this line of work entirely’ and asking desperately for forgiveness,” the man recounted.

While acknowledging the likelihood that the scammer would resume his activities, the man admitted, “the satisfaction of stealing from a thief is crazy.” This incident highlights the growing sophistication of online scams and the potential for AI to be used not only for malicious purposes but also as a powerful tool for defense and retribution.
