OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health: A Missed Possibility for Microsoft and Traditional Healthcare?
The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health has ignited debate, with many questioning why established players in the healthcare technology space didn’t develop a similar tool first.
The arrival of ChatGPT Health has already stirred the waters of the healthcare industry. Public relations pitches have flooded in, many arguing that OpenAI’s offering doesn’t quite hit the mark. however, beneath the critiques lies a more essential question: why weren’t existing electronic health record (EHR) companies or AI innovators the first to address the growing consumer demand for accessible, understandable health information?
The need is undeniable. as one CEO of an AI-driven health navigation company pointed out, Americans aren’t simply seeking AI to optimize fitness routines; they’re desperately searching for affordable care. This duality – the desire for both wellness and cost-effective healthcare – is precisely what fueled the progress of ChatGPT Health.
But the story extends beyond OpenAI’s recent proclamation. A key moment occurred in the fall of 2023, when Microsoft showcased a tool with strikingly similar capabilities. During an industry event, Microsoft demonstrated an AI feature capable of translating complex medical jargon into plain English, a capability that, according to observers, foreshadowed the core functionality of ChatGPT Health.
“Imagine you’ve had some bloodwork or radiol
ogy report and you’re trying to understand it,” explained one attendee. “The AI could summarize the findings, stating, such as, ‘Your bone density is slightly lower then average, but they are intact. This is called osteopenia.'”
And concluded with: “Your lungs are overinflated, which is consistent with emphysema, and you have osteopenia (decreased bone density).” Crucially, the simplified report included a disclaimer: “This simplified version was generated by an AI assistant.”
the potential impact of such a tool is significant. It could eliminate the need for patients to spend hours deciphering medical reports online and empower them with a better understanding of their health.
OpenAI appears to have recognized this opportunity, with the company noting that over 230 million people globally ask health and wellness-related questions on ChatGPT every week. “…help make sense of it all,” OpenAI stated, highlighting the driving force behind ChatGPT health, currently available to a limited number of users.
However, questions remain. The financial model for ChatGPT health is still unclear, and concerns about HIPAA compliance, while addressed by OpenAI, may not resonate with the average user. “I am willing to bet ‘no,'” one analyst commented, suggesting that many consumers are unaware of, or unconcerned with, HIPAA standards. Despite this, the underlying demand for a user-friendly tool that clarifies medical data is undeniable. There’s a clear need for a centralized hub for health information – medical records, wearable data – that can provide easily understandable and actionable insights.
microsoft, too, seems to acknowledge this need. In a blog post published in the fall of 2025, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman highlighted Copilot for health, stating it “addresses one of the most common user needs: health-related questions.” However, Copilot for health remains a general-purpose AI tool, lacking the dedicated functionality and stringent privacy standards required to handle sensitive medical data.
“Except copilot for health is not really a dedicated health tool at all. It’s simply copilot and you can ask the generative AI tool health-related questions. It doesn’t have the functionality or the privacy standards to handle an individual’s medical records or data from wearables,” a source explained.
This represents a significant missed opportunity, not just for Microsoft, but for traditional healthcare companies focused on patient-centric care. While executives from Epic Systems, including the firm’s chief medical officer, are expected to offer a counter-viewpoint,the current landscape suggests that OpenAI has seized an opportunity that others overlooked.
