Mostert Fuels Speculation as Triple Eight Expansion Looms for 2025 Supercars Season
The Supercars paddock is abuzz with speculation surrounding the future of star driver Chaz Mostert, as Triple Eight Race Engineering prepares to expand its operation to a three-car team in 2025.The expansion, announced during the Bathurst 1000 weekend, will see the team field a customer entry for SCT Motorsport, instantly sparking debate over potential drivers.
Mostert, a two-time Bathurst 1000 winner, has been heavily linked to the new seat. However, the 33-year-old is currently under contract with walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU), a team set to transition from Ford to Toyota next season.
“I’ve got really nothing to comment on other than I’m pretty happy at the moment,” Mostert told Speedcafe, carefully navigating questions about a potential move to Triple Eight. The rumors gained traction even within the competitive habitat of Bathurst, with former teammate Mark Winterbottom acknowledging the whispers during a post-Top 10 Shootout press conference.
“I’d heard it before then over the weekend, but I don’t know, it’s a lot of rumours,” Mostert conceded, acknowledging the “silly season” of driver speculation. When directly asked about his commitment to WAU thru 2026, Mostert affirmed, “Yes. I’m moving forward with Walkinshaws next year.”
Despite the apparent driver interest, SCT Motorsport is reportedly close to finalizing a driver for their triple Eight-run Mustang. The frontrunner for that position is currently 22-year-old Jackson Walls, who competes for Triple Eight in the Super2 Series.
Mostert’s recent racing schedule has been demanding. Following a disappointing early exit from the Bathurst 1000 due to engine failure, he traveled to the United States to compete in the Indianapolis 8 Hour alongside Kenny habul and will Power in a Mercedes-AMG. Habul praised Mostert’s performance, calling him “a demon” for his speed in the Mercedes.
Returning to Australia on Tuesday, Mostert participated in a Supercars media event ahead of the Gold Coast 500. He expressed feeling prepared despite the quick turnaround. “I landed back this morning at 5am so I’ve got a couple of days to get back into the time zone,” he explained. He credited WAU for allowing him to pursue the Indianapolis race, noting that “sometimes you have to go do something different to find that” extra edge.
Entering the gold coast 500, Mostert sits sixth in the championship standings, 118 points behind leader Broc feeney after the Finals Series reset and bonus points request. The driver market remains fluid, and the coming weeks promise further developments as teams finalize their plans for the 2025 Supercars season.
