Teh JS Cherbourg handball team faced a tough challenge Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as they hosted Nîmes in the 16th finals of the French Cup. Despite a spirited effort,the home team,known as the Mauves,ultimately fell short against the Starligue sixth-place finishers from last season.
The match, originally scheduled for 8:00 p.m., experienced a slight delay, kicking off at 8:15 p.m. due to a late referees’ train. The atmosphere was electric as the crowd at Jean-Jaurès stadium filled up, with the Mauve Kop warming up the cheers.
A Close Contest in the Frist Half
Nîmes drew first blood with an opening goal from Anquetil at 2 minutes.JS Cherbourg quickly responded, with Ivanovic leveling the score at 1-1 just moments later, marking the first official goal of the season for the home side. Nîmes then pulled ahead, but Guemeida managed to reduce the deficit, showing skill against the French international goalkeeper Wesley Pardin, making it 2-3.
By the 8th minute, Almeida showcased the power of her left arm to make it 5-6. However, Nîmes extended their lead, scoring into an empty net to widen the gap to 5-8. A penalty converted by Vincent and a two-minute sanction for Ivanovic further pushed the score to 4-6.
JS cherbourg’s captain, Axel Oppedisano, received treatment for an ankle knock early in the match but continued to play. Dayann Lopez managed to equalize for JS Cherbourg at 4-4 in the 5th minute. Nicolas Gauthier made his first save of the evening at the 6th minute, keeping the score level at 4-4. Léo Weber had an opportunity to give Cherbourg the lead but was thwarted by Pardin in a one-on-one at 7 minutes.
Nîmes Pulls Ahead
At the 10-minute mark, Nîmes increased their advantage to 5-8. Léo Weber confidently converted a penalty at 11 minutes, bringing the Mauves closer at 7-9.The Nîmes goalkeeper, Pardin, then responded to a shot from Gauthier, maintaining the two-goal difference.
At 13 minutes, Vincent’s penalty found it’s way between Gauthier’s legs, putting Nîmes up 7-10. The home team’s coach, edu Fernandez Roura, was notably absent from the bench, with assistant Antonio Rivera leading the team. By 15 minutes, Nîmes capitalized on turnovers, with Wedberg scoring twice to create a five-goal cushion at 8-13, prompting a timeout from JS Cherbourg.
Almeida scored her second goal of the evening, but Wedberg continued to find the net, extending Nîmes’ lead to 8-12. At 17 minutes, adel Guemeida scored for JS Cherbourg, bringing them within three goals at 10-13.The intensity rose as Thomas Loppy made a steadfast effort to prevent Nîmes from regaining possession at 18 minutes.
The 19th minute saw Gardois Gibelin receive a two-minute penalty for a foul on Hugo Lima, with JS Cherbourg starting to find their rhythm at 10-13.
