Chennai: Chief Minister Stalin has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah asking him to take appropriate steps to improve the Chennai Meteorological Center.
In the letter, he stated:
The state government has relied on the Indian Meteorological Department’s report to deal with natural calamities like heavy rains and severe storms. However, the Chennai Meteorological Department is unable to provide timely forecasts for moderate to heavy rains.

For example, at 12:00 noon on December 30, the Chennai Meteorological Department forecast moderate to heavy rains in some parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in the Villupuram and Delta districts. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts will receive light to moderate rain in the next few hours. .
However, heavy rains lashed Chennai and its environs from noon to night on the 30th. At 4:15 pm, the Chennai Meteorological Center issued an ‘Orange Alert’. Prior to that, heavy rains lashed Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts and submerged many areas. This caused heavy traffic congestion in Chennai.
The Chennai Meteorological Department lacks adequate capacity to accurately calculate and warn of rains in a timely manner. As a result, the state and district administrations are unable to make timely reservations. This has a major impact on the normal life and medical services of the public.

‘Red Alert’ These events highlight the importance of improving the weather forecasting system and the need to invest more in refining its technology.
Therefore, appropriate steps should be taken to improve the Chennai Meteorological Center so that ‘Red Alert’ conditions such as heavy rains and storms can be predicted quickly. Thus said the Chief Minister.
