As of late December 2025, a meaningful increase in chikungunya cases has been reported worldwide, prompting heightened surveillance and public health responses across multiple regions. The World Health Institution (WHO) data reveals a complex epidemiological landscape, with outbreaks and sustained transmission occurring in Africa, the Mediterranean, Europe, the Americas, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific.
Africa Faces Ongoing Transmission
Across the African continent, 2,211 suspected cases of chikungunya, including 111 confirmed cases, were reported in Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, and Senegal as of December 6, 2025. Mauritius is currently experiencing the highest number of cases. Four confirmed cases were reported in Comoros between January 1 and May 31,2025,while Senegal recorded 10 confirmed cases,with the last reported in late September.Mauritius has seen 1,583 cases between mid-March and early August, with the vast majority being locally acquired. A confirmed outbreak in Kenya’s Mombasa County, beginning in June 2025, resulted in 614 cases, including 97 laboratory-confirmed, but has since subsided.
Mediterranean Region Sees Outbreaks in pakistan and Somalia
As of October 2025, a total of 1,596 cases, including 67 confirmed, have been reported in Pakistan and Somalia. In Pakistan, case numbers in 2025 have remained relatively stable compared too 2024, though a notable increase was observed between May and June. An outbreak was declared in Peshawar district in September, with 28 laboratory-confirmed cases reported in the following weeks. Somalia has reported 1,529 suspected cases, with 39 confirmed, primarily concentrated in the coastal regions.
Europe Reports Local Transmission in Italy and Spain
Local transmission of chikungunya has been reported in Italy and Spain. In Italy, 148 cases have been reported in the Lazio region, with evidence of local mosquito-borne transmission.Spain has reported 112 cases, primarily in the Valencia region, linked to imported cases and subsequent local spread. Investigations are underway to determine the extent of local transmission in both countries.
The Americas Experience Significant Outbreaks in Brazil and Cuba
Transmission continues across the Americas, with a total of 302,018 cases recorded in 16 countries, including 111,379 confirmed cases and 154 deaths. Brazil accounts for the vast majority of cases and deaths in the region, with 243,915 cases and 116 deaths. Cuba is also experiencing a significant outbreak, with 45,388 cases reported since July 2025, including 21 deaths. Other countries reporting cases include the United States, Bolivia, Argentina, and several Caribbean nations. In Bolivia, 5,784 cases have been reported, with 70% laboratory confirmed.
Southeast Asia Faces Increasing Case Numbers in India and Thailand
At the beginning of December 2025, over 115,985 cases of chikungunya have been identified in the WHO South-east Asia region, primarily in India and Thailand. India reported 108,379 suspected cases and 4,995 confirmed cases between January and August 2025, with Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat reporting the highest numbers. thailand has recorded 1,379 cases, approximately double the number reported during the same period in 2024, with the northern region, particularly Chiang Mai, most affected. Bangladesh has also reported 1,081 suspected cases in Dhaka, with widespread urban transmission. Sri Lanka saw a peak in cases during June, with Jaffna accounting for over 80% of national cases as of October.
Western Pacific Region Reports Local Transmission in China and Indonesia
A total of 34,035 chikungunya infections, including two deaths, have been reported in 11 countries and territories in the Western Pacific region. China has reported the highest number of locally confirmed cases, with 29,497 cases, primarily in Guangdong province.
