5-year-old dies in suspected DUI crash

MARTINEZ, Calif. – A tragic crash in Martinez early Sunday morning has left a 5-year-old child dead and an 11-year-old injured, according to California Highway Patrol.

Investigators reported that the vehicle veered off the road for reasons yet to be determined and collided with a tree on westbound State Route 4, just west of Morello Avenue.

The vehicle contained three occupants at the time of the crash. Tragically, the 5-year-old child, who was not properly secured in a car seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 11-year-old was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and the driver of the vehicle was also hospitalized with injuries. The driver has since been arrested on suspicion of DUI and manslaughter.

Although it is unclear whether the children in the car were related to the driver, witness Candice Turner reported, “The mom is okay, I was talking to her for a little, but she’s okay.”

This devastating incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of following traffic laws and practicing safe driving habits. California Highway Patrol urges drivers to adhere to the posted speed limit, always wear seatbelts, and exercise caution while driving.

KTVU reporter Bailey O’Carroll contributed to this report.
