Chile is preparing to shift to summer time in 2025, a seasonal adjustment that consistently raises questions about clock changes and their impact on daily life. The government has released details to clarify the transition, ensuring residents are well-informed about the upcoming changes and when to adjust their clocks.
The decision to implement daylight saving time stems from a long-standing effort to optimize energy consumption and align Chile’s schedule with international standards, particularly for trade and interaction. The initiative, championed by the Ministry of Energy, aims to reduce electricity demand during peak evening hours by extending daylight into the later afternoon. This practice has been intermittently employed in Chile for decades, with adjustments made based on economic and social considerations.
When Does Summer Time Begin in Chile?
According to an official government declaration, Chile will officially adopt summer time on Saturday, September 6, 2025. This change will affect most of the country, with one notable exception. The Magallanes region and Chilean Antarctica will maintain their current time zone (UTC-3), remaining unaffected by the seasonal adjustment.
Adjusting yoru Clocks: Forward One Hour
For Continental Chile, the transition to summer time requires clocks to be advanced by 60 minutes. specifically,at midnight on Saturday,September 6,clocks will jump forward to 1:00 AM on Sunday,September 7.
However, residents of Insular Chile, including Easter Island and the Salas and Gómez Islands, will need to adjust their clocks at a diffrent time. They should modify their clocks at 10:00 PM on the first saturday of September.
Return to Standard Time in 2026
The seasonal time adjustment isn’t permanent. Regulations stipulate a return to standard time in April 2026. A senior official stated, “The subsequent time change would be in April 2026, to give rise to winter again.”
Specifically, clocks will be turned back one hour on Saturday, April 5, 2026, remaining at that setting until the first Saturday of September 2026. This cyclical adjustment aims to maximize daylight hours during the warmer months.
