Huawei Mate X7 Launches, Challenging Samsung’s Foldable Dominance

Huawei has officially unveiled the Mate X7, a direct successor to the Mate X6, signaling the company’s continued commitment to the high-end foldable smartphone market. The new device not only showcases Huawei’s expertise in this emerging category but also surpasses Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 in a key area: durability.
The Mate X7 will initially be available in China starting December 5, 2025, with pricing beginning at 12,999 yuan (~€1,830) for the 12GB/256GB configuration and 13,999 yuan (~€1,970) for the 12GB/512GB model. Exclusive Collector’s Editions will be offered at 17,599 yuan (~€2,480). While Huawei has not yet announced a firm date for international availability, industry observers anticipate a global rollout in the near future.
A Leap in Durability and Display Technology
The Mate X7 retains a similar form factor to its predecessor, the Mate X6, but features significantly larger screens. Users will experience a 6.49-inch external display and an expansive 8-inch internal screen, both utilizing LTPO technology with a dynamic refresh rate of 1-120 Hz and 1440 Hz PWM. Brightness levels reach an impressive 3,000 nits on the external display and 2,500 nits on the internal screen, further enhanced by Kunlun glass in the Collector’s Edition.
What truly sets the Mate X7 apart is its enhanced durability. The device boasts IP58 and IP59 certifications, exceeding the IP48 rating of the Galaxy Z Fold7. This improved water and dust resistance provides users with greater peace of mind.
XMAGE Camera System and Powerful Performance
Huawei has equipped the Mate X7 with a high-end XMAGE camera configuration. The system includes a 50 MP main sensor with a variable aperture ranging from f/1.49 to f/4, a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 50 MP 3.5x macro telephoto lens with optical image stabilization (OIS). Both the internal and external displays feature 8 MP cameras capable of recording video in 4K resolution.
Under the hood, the Mate X7 is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro processor, fabricated using a 5nm process. The device can be configured with up to 20 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. A substantial 5,525 mAh battery (5,600 mAh in the Collector’s Edition) supports 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and reverse charging capabilities.
HarmonyOS 6 and Next-Gen Connectivity
The Mate X7 runs on HarmonyOS 6, featuring an integrated AI layer designed to optimize multitasking, dynamic window management, and productivity tools for larger screens. Huawei has also incorporated cutting-edge connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0.
Furthermore, select variants of the Mate X7 offer satellite communication capabilities, alongside a reinforced internal architecture and a more durable chassis. According to a company release, these advancements position the Mate X7 as one of the most robust and feature-rich foldable smartphones currently available. One analyst noted that Samsung will likely need to respond with innovations of its own to maintain its position in the foldable market.
