China implants first chip in man to eliminate alcohol cravings

In China, a 36-year-old man with an alcohol addiction has become the first to be surgically implanted with a chip designed to eliminate cravings for alcohol, writes Zakon.kz.

On April 12, Liu underwent a five-minute procedure as part of a clinical trial. They are led by former Vice President of the UN International Narcotics Control Board Hao Wei, SCMP reports.

The implanted chip is supposed to help Liu overcome his drinking cravings for 5 months. It releases naltrexone, a substance used in addiction treatment to prevent relapse. Naltrexone is absorbed by the body and acts on receptors in the brain.

Liu has been an alcoholic for 15 years. On average, he drank a bottle of Chinese liquor a day. In this case, a man often falls into aggression. It is reported that his day usually looked like this: drink a bottle of liquor before breakfast and continue to drink during the day at work, and then in the evening “until he passes out.”
