China overtakes Japan and becomes leading exporter

DECRYPTION – Long dominated by foreign groups present in the Middle Kingdom, exports are boosted by local players.

Japanese automakers have confirmed this themselves. For the first time, they have just been overtaken by their Chinese counterparts in the number of vehicles exported. In 2023, manufacturers based in China exported 4.91 million cars, buses and trucks according to the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Caam) while the Japanese delivered 4.42 million units outside the Archipelago. Japan had held the title of leading vehicle exporter for six years. Japanese manufacturers, who produce twice as many vehicles in their factories abroad (17 million in 2022) as in Japan, are in fact penalized in this calculation by the weak presence of Chinese outside their country.
