“China’s goal of establishing a stable, healthy and sustainable relationship between China and the US has not changed,” Xi said during the opening speech of their recent meeting.
He continued: “China is ready to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation, and manage differences, in order to try to achieve a stable transition of relations for the benefit of both community.”
When it was Biden’s turn to speak, he praised the ”long partnership” with Xi and admitted they “didn’t always see eye to eye” but said they were “genuine” in their communication, which he described as “crucial”.
“Open communication prevents misunderstanding and prevents countries from falling into conflict,” he said.
Biden said, “What happens between the United States and China will affect everyone in the world, making it their responsibility to come to an understanding.”
What are the main challenges currently facing US-China relations?
Interview with Dr. Emily Chen: Expert on US-China Relations
Time.news Editor: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Chen. In light of President Xi Jinping’s recent remarks about the US-China relationship, what do you think are the implications of his statement that the relationship has not changed since Donald Trump’s election?
Dr. Emily Chen: Thank you for having me. Xi Jinping’s assertion suggests a continuity in China’s foreign policy stance towards the US, regardless of the changes in the White House. This indicates that China seeks to maintain its diplomatic objectives and strategic interests, emphasizing stability and cooperation. The implication here is twofold: on one hand, it suggests a desire for consistent engagement, while on the other hand, it reflects the growing challenges in US-China relations that need careful management.
Time.news Editor: President Xi mentioned a “stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship.” In your opinion, what are the essential elements for achieving that kind of relationship?
Dr. Emily Chen: Achieving a stable and sustainable relationship depends on open communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to find common ground. Both nations have significant global influence, and cooperation on issues like climate change, trade, and public health is crucial. Managing differences, as Xi noted, will also be key. This involves acknowledging conflicts while actively working to prevent them from escalating.
Time.news Editor: President Biden emphasized the importance of genuine communication. How critical do you believe this is for avoiding misunderstandings between the two powers?
Dr. Emily Chen: Absolutely, open and genuine communication is vital. It acts as a buffer against misinterpretations that can lead to conflict. The more both sides engage in candid discussions, the less likely they are to fall into traps of insecurity or hostility. Biden is correct in stating that not always seeing eye to eye can be legitimate, but fostering direct dialogue can mitigate tensions.
Time.news Editor: Given the interdependence of both countries, how can industries prepare for potential fluctuations in the US-China trade relationship?
Dr. Emily Chen: Industries should prioritize adaptability and diversification. Companies heavily reliant on supply chains in China, for example, should explore alternative markets to reduce risk. Additionally, keeping abreast of policy changes and engaging in risk assessments can guide strategic decisions. Companies can also foster relationships across both markets to buffer against sudden shifts and leverage opportunities that arise from cooperation.
Time.news Editor: Looking ahead, what practical advice would you give to policymakers in both the US and China to foster a more positive relationship?
Dr. Emily Chen: Policymakers should prioritize dialogue and collaboration on shared challenges. Establishing regular high-level meetings can help build trust. They should also consider joint initiatives that focus on global challenges such as health crises and climate change, which necessitate cooperation. active involvement of private sectors in dialogues can bridge gaps between official policies and public sentiment, facilitating a more cohesive relationship.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Dr. Chen. Your insights today on US-China relations, particularly in the context of Xi Jinping and Biden’s discussions, are invaluable for our understanding of the global landscape.
Dr. Emily Chen: Thank you for having me. It’s vital we continue to monitor these developments closely and keep the conversation open.
