INVESTIGATION – The initiative launched last March by the government and distributors is strongly criticized by consumer associations. But what is it really? Le Figaro went to do some shopping…

«The offers of the signs contain a lot of bad products» and even turn out «long-term health risks“, according to Jamy Balkiri, president of the consumption division of Families of France. Same observation on the side of the UFC Que Choisir, which, from the launch of this initiative on March 15, pinned several brands on the nutritional quality of their anti-inflation quarter. The association pointed in particular to the low quantity of fresh products and many processed products. To get to the bottom of it, we decided to test. Le Figaro obtained around twenty references in three stores, and tried to create a varied menu over several days.

Let’s hunt for red labels, synonymous with the lowest prices in the store, on the shelves of supermarkets near my home. Eggs, steaks, cheeses, fish, desserts, pasta or cakes… Composing meals only with products from the anti-inflation quarter, not so simple. In all, 24 references from Intermarché, Carrefour and Système U fill my basket. Each brand has its own strategy, with respectively, “500 anti-inflation products», «100 essential products» et «100 nutrition products” as well as “150 products at cost prices“. Still have to find them in store.
