A girl from an ultra-Orthodox home in Safed suffocated this evening (Saturday night) from an avocado and lost consciousness. A paramedic from the Rescue Union performed the resuscitation operations on the girl and they restored her consciousness. She was later evacuated to Ziv Hospital in Safed.

Her condition is defined as stable and she is fully conscious.

Guy Shaul, a paramedic at the Rescue Union who treated the toddler, described: “The neighbor came to me with the girl and told me that she suffocated while eating avocados. I performed operations on her to save her life (Heimlich) and miraculously she regained full consciousness.”

Moti Neumann, another paramedic from the Rescue Union, said: “After the initial assistance we provided her, she was evacuated in an intensive care unit to continue receiving medical treatment and tests at Ziv Hospital in a stable condition and in full consciousness.”

Guidelines previously issued by the Medical Division of the Rescue Union read: “The way to prevent suffocation in children – cut the food into small pieces and make sure to teach the toddlers to chew the food well before swallowing.”
