Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie presented his candidacy on Tuesday for the Republican primaries for the White House in which he will compete with his former friend, former President Donald Trump, from whom he has distanced himself in recent times.

Christie today completed the necessary documentation for his candidacy, which will be added to that of Trump and the other candidates: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis; former Vice President Mike Pence; the former US ambassador to the UN and former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley; Senator Tim Scott and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson.

He is expected to publicly announce the candidacy tonight at an event in the state of New Hampshire.

The former governor of New Jersey (2010-2018), who already participated in the conservative primaries in 2016, then suffered the impact of the so-called “Bridgegate” case.

That case concerns the two Christie aides who were found guilty in 2017 of conspiracy, fraud, misuse of public infrastructures and violation of the civil rights of citizens.

They were prosecuted for the sudden closure, in September 2013, of two lanes of the George Washington Bridge, which links Fort Lee, New Jersey, to Upper Manhattan, New York, which created extensive traffic congestion on the side of New Jersey for four days.

Later it emerged that the partial closure of the bridge occurred as a political retaliation against the mayor of Fort LeeDemocrat Mark Sokolich, for failing to support Governor Christie in his re-election campaign.

The scandal put Christie in the eye of the hurricane, whose name had come to sound then as his party’s favorite for the primaries, in which Trump finally prevailed.

After ceasing to be governor, in 2018, he was hired by the ABC network as a political analyst, given his closeness to Trump, with whom he definitively broke when the New York businessman questioned the cleanliness of the 2020 elections.

Christie became the director of Trump’s transition team when he was elected president, although he ended up being replaced by the then vice president-elect, Mike Pencein the middle of the “Bridgegate” scandal.

Prior to the presentation of his candidacy, the creation of a Political Action Committee (PAC) was announced that financially supports his political aspirations and has been baptized “Tell It Like It Is” (say it like it is).

This PAC is chaired by William P. Palatucci, a longtime adviser to Christie and a member of the National Committee of the Republican Party.
