holiday Cheer Delivered to big Cats and Critters at Cat Tales Wildlife Center

A heartwarming event brought festive joy to the residents of Cat Tales Wildlife Center in Mead, Washington, as families gathered on Sunday to witness a special delivery from Santa and his elves. The annual gift-giving occasion provided much-needed enrichment for the animals during the center’s typically quiet winter months.

The event, which drew a large crowd, saw gift boxes presented to the center’s diverse animal population. While some gifts contained treats or sawdust flakes for playful exploration, the biggest hit proved to be the boxes themselves.

Did you know?-Big cats in captivity often exhibit stereotypic behaviors due to boredom. Enrichment activities, like gift boxes, help stimulate their minds and improve their well-being.

“For most of them, they’re empty. For the big cats, because like all cats they love boxes so if they tear into them that’s fun. Once they have them, they’ll sit in them, pee in them, do all the cat things,” explained a senior official at Cat Tales Wildlife Center. This observation highlights the innate feline fascination with enclosed spaces, a behavior well-known to pet owners.

The influx of visitors also proved beneficial for the animals’ well-being. According to the center’s leadership, the presence of new faces provides crucial enrichment for the animals, notably during the slower winter season. The opportunity to observe and interact with people, even from a distance, stimulates the animals and contributes to their overall health.

Pro tip:-Supporting local wildlife centers through donations or volunteering helps provide essential care and enrichment for animals that cannot be released into the wild.

Families in attendance were also able to capture the holiday spirit with photos alongside Santa and Mrs. Claus. The event served as a festive outing for the community and a valuable opportunity to support the work of Cat Tales Wildlife Center.

The center anticipates continued community engagement throughout the winter, recognizing the positive impact of these interactions on the animals in their care.
