We welcome 2026 with a real winter
Christmas week begins with cloudy and foggy weather, with no precipitation expected. Low visibility conditions will be present in the mornings. A break in the clouds is anticipated around and after noon on Monday in Southwest Bulgaria, and on Tuesday in the Danube Plain. Daily temperatures on both days will range between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius.
Precipitation will begin on Christmas Eve, starting as rain in the lower parts of the country and transitioning to snow in the mountains of Western and, in some areas, Central Bulgaria. Colder air moving in overnight and on Christmas Day will cause the rain to change to snow in western and central regions. By December 26, precipitation will be limited to the mountains, with a decreasing trend.
Preliminary forecasts from meteorological models suggest a potential snow cover of 5-10 cm in the plains, up to 20 cm in the foothills, and around 50 cm in the higher mountain belt of the Rilo-Rhodope massif.
Strong winds from the east-northeast are expected on Christmas Day. Temperatures will drop during this period, reaching between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius in the afternoon in Northern and Western Bulgaria, and 8-9 degrees Celsius elsewhere.
Following the snowfall, around Stefanovden (December 27), the weather will exhibit typical winter characteristics. Cloud cover will be dynamic, with occasional breaks, and morning temperatures could fall to minus 7 or minus 8 degrees Celsius, with daytime temperatures between 0-5 degrees Celsius.
The days surrounding the New Year are expected to have a low probability of significant precipitation. A cold front with localized snow showers is anticipated. A more substantial rainfall event is possible between January 2-5.
Bulgaria is poised to welcome 2026 with decidedly icy winter conditions. Morning temperatures are forecast to fall to between minus 5 and minus 10 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs around zero.
