Time.news – It’s coming “Circonda”the project he takes around Sicily circus artists from all over the worldor. CircOnda declares his intentions already from the name and that is combine contemporary circus and surfing waves. Yes, in fact a group of twelve professional circus performers arriving from different parts of the world toured three beaches on three sides of Sicily.

The artistic project produced by the artistic network Cordata FOR and directed by the director Riccardo Strano was awarded by the Ministry of Culture as an expression of a dimension of particular artistic and cultural prestige and recognizability on a national and international level and thus began this adventure which following a call in which over one hundred artists participated, of which only twelve have been selected has already led circus performers surfing on various beaches in Sicily from San Vito Lo Capo to Trapani passing through Mondello to Palermo and finally in the last Sicilian stage which took place in October in Punta Braccetto in the province of Ragusa.

“I have been surfing for a long time – says Riccardo Strano – and I understood that it helps me and stimulates me in artistic research. I started from this thought to experiment with a method for creating and staging contemporary circus performances. The surfer and the circus artist have many common factors for example they both work with an object but while the surfer fuels his actions with the sea and the wave, the circus performer is driven by the scene and the audience. There is thus a continuous transposition between two apparently different disciplines, circus and surfing, but which ultimately affect the artist in the body, mind and emotions in the same way”.

The path that the artists of Circonda have undertaken includes surfing in the morning thanks to the instructors of the Serfatari Surf School and in the afternoon everyone in the theater or in the rehearsal room to create new performances. The artists, learning to surf, try to reproduce the actions and emotions felt in the surfing experience, thus finding concrete elements which, once transposed into artistic research, make them capable of developing new styles and their own contemporary circus dramaturgy for the mass on stage of shows.

The fruit of this path also sees moments of performances in circus festivals such as the Ballarò Buskers Festival, Naviganti Festival and Ibla Buskers, to give artists the opportunity to test their creations with an audience. “Collaborating with circus artists is always extremely stimulating – says surf instructor Gianni Iura – their determination and physical preparation has allowed us to focus more on what is the essence of surfing, that is, the relationship between the surfer and the ‘wave, which in line with Circonda’s project becomes the union of writing and staging”.

Furthermore, the experience of discovering new places, the sea and surfing becomes creative lifeblood in different forms, from new ideas to stage to new sensations to tell to those who approach that beach for the first time. In fact, this innovative artistic journey aims to enhance the beaches they have touched the stages of Circonda and the artists will produce podcasts where they will talk about their experience and what they discovered about the places they visited and how even locations can contaminate the production of artistic works.

The podcasts will be found on Spotify but also near the beaches thanks to the municipalities of San Vito Lo Capo, Palermo and Santa Croce Camerina which have embraced the project, clearly visible signs will be displayed with a QR code to be scanned which will take you directly back to the story audio by Circonda, so the public will be able to fully relive the same sensations that the artists describe. Surround after having taken the fifteen artists around Sicily on a surf and to the festivals to bring on stage everything they have absorbed from the sea, from the light, from the waves, they will land for the last stage of the project journey in Portugal in November , in search of the biggest waves in the world.

The emotions collected thanks to the imposing waves of the Mediterranean will be reworked in the rehearsal room and each with its own specialty, trapeze, handstand, acrobatic bicycle, tightrope balancing and so on, he will try to stage the emotions felt. “Learning to control emotions is training – adds Riccardo Strano, – training them in the sea is fundamental for the scene, for managing emotions in front of the public. Telling with the body and therefore with physicality the emotions that the sea and surfing gives it’s a reworking exercise that helps artists grow in their profession. They learn to translate sensations into stage movements.”
