French Society Grapples with Persistent Homophobia and Transphobia, Despite Evolving Acceptance

Despite growing societal acceptance, discrimination and violence against LGBTI+ individuals remain prevalent in France, with young people facing disproportionately higher health risks. A conference hosted by Rennes 2 University will explore the underlying factors contributing to this ongoing disparity.
A recent conference, part of the “Equality Tuesdays” series, highlighted a troubling reality: while French society appears to be becoming more accepting of diverse sexualities and gender identities, tangible improvements in safety and well-being for LGBTI+ individuals have lagged. Data from a 2024 INSERM survey on sexuality in France reveals that health risks continue to be significantly elevated among young LGBTI+ people compared to their heterosexual peers. This finding contradicts a perceived trend of increasing acceptance noted by IFOP in 2019.
Unpacking Cis-Heterosexism and Cisnormativity
The conference, led by Christèle Fraïssé, a teacher-researcher in social psychology at the University of Western Brittany, examined the root causes of this persistent discrimination. Fraïssé’s research draws on decades of television news footage from the INA archives, revealing a consistent pattern of bias. She argues that the persistence of homophobia and transphobia is rooted in deeply ingrained systems of domination.
These systems, termed cis-heterosexism and cisnormativity, maintain a hierarchy that privileges heterosexuality and cisgender identity. “These processes result in the invisibilization and minoritization of sexualities and gender identities other than heterosexual and cisgender,” Fraïssé explained. This marginalization leads to these populations being described as “unnatural” or less legitimate, increasing their vulnerability to various forms of violence.
The Role of Media Representation
Fraïssé’s analysis of television news archives demonstrates how media representation has historically reinforced these biases. By examining how LGBTI+ individuals and issues were portrayed over time, she aims to expose the subtle and overt ways in which societal norms are perpetuated.
The conference also featured a book sale, with the partner bookstore Comment dire in attendance.
Equality Tuesdays: Fostering Dialogue and Awareness
The “Equality Tuesdays” initiative, jointly organized by the Equality Mission and the cultural service of Rennes 2 University, provides a platform for open discussion and debate on issues of equality and the fight against discrimination. These free and public events aim to raise awareness and promote understanding.
All “Equality Tuesdays” sessions are rebroadcast with subtitles on The area of.
You can also find recordings of these events on the Youtube page of Rennes 2 University.
This ongoing series underscores the importance of continued dialogue and critical examination of societal norms to achieve genuine equality for all.
