British press reports confirmed that Manchester City and Chelsea face the threat of expulsion from the English Premier League in the coming months.
According to The Sun newspaper, City and Chelsea face the risk of being expelled from the Premier League if they are found guilty of violating the rules of financial fair play.
The newspaper explained that City faces 115 charges from the English Premier League’s legal officials in February 2023, and it is expected that an independent committee will begin looking into the case during the coming period. It stated that Chelsea have not yet been officially charged, but it was reported last summer that it had committed violations. Finance during the era of former owner Roman Abramovich, who made payments to agents from accounts that did not pass through the club’s official books.
The British newspaper revealed that Chelsea’s latest financial accounts showed that 150 million pounds were set aside when Todd Boyle bought the club, to cover potential legal costs.
The Sun reported that the two Premier League giants were warned that they may now face the maximum penalty by the committee, which deducted 4 points from Nottingham Forest’s tally this week.
The penalties range from warnings, points deduction, and even expulsion from the English Premier League, and if the charges against the two clubs are proven, they are closer to being subjected to the maximum penalty.
