A house under construction in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego was heavily damaged by fire on Friday, but firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to neighboring homes.

Fire crews responded to the scene in the 4000 block of 42nd Street, between University and Polk Avenues,at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, they encountered meaningful flames and smoke emanating from the construction site, according to capt. Jason Shanley of the San Diego Fire-Rescue department. The fire was contained within approximately 15 minutes.

Did you know?-Construction sites are particularly vulnerable to fires due to the presence of flammable materials like lumber, paints, and solvents. Proper storage and disposal of these materials are crucial for fire prevention.

Construction Site Origin, No Injuries Reported

The fire originated in the backyard of the property, where a new house was actively being built. Firefighters promptly adopted a defensive posture, prioritizing the safety of surrounding structures and confirming that no one was inside the building. “It is likely a total loss, but too soon to tell,” Shanley stated. The quick response and defensive strategy prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent homes, protecting the surrounding community.

A considerable response was mounted, involving five fire engines, one fire truck, a battalion chief, one ambulance, and investigators from the Metro Arson strike Team. In total, nearly 30 personnel were dispatched to combat the fire. The large deployment demonstrates the seriousness with which the fire department approached the incident, ensuring adequate resources were available to control and extinguish the blaze.

Pro tip:-if you discover a fire, immediately call 911 and provide the dispatcher with a clear and concise location. Evacuate the area and do not attempt to fight the fire yourself unless you have been properly trained.

Examination Underway,Damage Primarily to Framing

fortunately,no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. While the full extent of the monetary loss remains undetermined, initial assessments indicate the damage is largely confined to the structural framing of the unfinished home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Investigators believe the damage, while significant, is primarily limited to the home’s framework, potentially reducing overall reconstruction costs.

Investigators from the Metro Arson Strike Team are working to determine the origin and circumstances that led to the blaze.Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. The Metro Arson Strike Team will analyze fire patterns and potential ignition sources to determine the cause, and whether the fire was accidental or intentionally set.
