Bucharest Mayoral Race Plagued by Debate Refusals as Election Day Approaches

A growing dispute over public debates is overshadowing the final stretch of the Bucharest mayoral election, with leading candidates seemingly reluctant to face each other directly before voters head to the polls on December 7. The controversy centers on refusals to participate in debates organized by self-reliant bodies, raising questions about clarity and accountability in the race.

Calls for Debate Intensify

The push for a public forum originated with a request from a high-ranking official, who, according to a USR deputy speaking on the România politică program from Prima News, questioned the willingness of candidates to engage. “But does he really not accept Ciprian [Ciucu] or do the others not accept? That is what he would like to see,” the deputy relayed, referencing a conversation with the head of state following discussions with USR candidate Cătălin Drula.

This sentiment was echoed by Drula himself, who,in a dialog with NicuÈ™or Dan – as reported by Libertatea – expressed frustration over the lack of commitment from his rivals. “Well, they won’t… Ciucu and Băluță won’t,” Drula reportedly stated, prompting a moment of stunned silence from Dan. drula further argued that holding elections without a debate is “absurd,” emphasizing the need for voters to hear directly from all contenders.

Candidates Cite Concerns and Propose Alternatives

Åžtefan-Iulian LÅ‘rincz, a USR deputy, detailed specific refusals, stating that Ciprian Ciucu of the PNL and Daniel Băluță of the PSD declined an invitation to a debate hosted by the university of Bucharest. “They were invited and they refused. Only Cătălin Drula accepted this invitation, which is why the debate did not take place,” LÅ‘rincz explained. He added that on December 4, only Drula and potentially Băluță accepted an invitation to appear on Digi24, while Ciucu again declined.

Ciucu, the first vice-president of the PNL,has proposed a debate involving the top five candidates based on current polling data. However, he claims that anca Alexandrescu, the candidate representing the AUR, is avoiding his proposed format. “As Anca Alexandrescu is running away from the debate that I proposed, I believe that Mr. Vlad Gheorghe can very well come to the debate that I proposed in this format of five,” Ciucu stated.

He also voiced skepticism about debates organized by entities perceived as aligned with specific candidates. “I don’t believe in the seriousness of debates organized by the candidates’ friends, on the candidates’ televisions, or in the candidates’ headquarters,” Ciucu added in a Facebook post.

Drula Appeals Directly to PNL for Ciucu’s participation

The urgency to secure a debate was further highlighted by reports that drula directly appealed to representatives of the PNL – Ciucu’s party – during a parliamentary session, urging them to convince Ciucu to participate. Sources who witnessed the exchange stated that Drula specifically requested the PNL representatives to persuade Ciucu to accept a debate.

A Tight Race for Bucharest

The debate over debates unfolds as polls indicate a competitive race for Bucharest’s City Hall. Daniel Băluță (PSD), Ciprian Ciucu (PNL), and Cătălin Drula (USR) are currently considered the frontrunners, according to available opinion polls. The outcome of the election could hinge on whether voters feel they have had sufficient opportunity to assess the candidates’ platforms and visions for the city.
