Start-ups promise a more transparent market for voluntary compensation. But there is suspicion of greenwashing. In this way, they want to regain the trust that companies have lost.

It is a constant in the financial markets that a gold rush is accompanied by questionable practices. This also applies to the market for voluntary CO₂ compensation. Promoted by the international climate agreements in Kyoto and Paris, a network of initiatives gradually emerged that offset high greenhouse gas emissions – through reforestation projects, stoves powered by renewable energy and technical solutions.

But the market is unsettled. Too many projects have been used in this way for greenwashing – i.e. the public identification of a business practice that only appears to be sustainable. Savings were counted twice, for example as compensation for Western industrial groups and government reduction programs. The success of the initiatives was sometimes questionable. That’s why an entire market is looking for guidance. A favorable environment for start-ups with high demands.
