In Belarus, the number of hot days will increase. This was announced by Natalia Klevets, Head of the Climate Change Study Department of the Meteorological and Climate Monitoring Service, Belhydromet Data Fund.

“According to the forecasts, it is expected that in the future we will have increased maximum temperatures, the frequency of heat waves will be higher, and the number of hot days will increase. And on average, the temperature of the summer season will increase,” said Natalya Klevets.

For example, in Minsk over the past 10 years, the number of cases of uncomfortable hot weather has tripled. Increasingly, the air temperature reaches 30−35 degrees heat. According to both current data and climate forecasts, Belarusians will increasingly face heat. According to the climatologist, this factor will cause an increase in electricity consumption, for example, for air conditioning, that is, the need for air conditioning in the country should also increase.

As for the current Belarusian summer, according to the forecasts of the North Eurasian Climate Center, it will be warmer than usual, that is, the average temperature will exceed the climatic norm. So, in Belarus, the average annual temperature is 7.2 degrees Celsius, for summer – plus 18 degrees. The warmest summer since 1881 was in 2010, when the average air temperature was 20.6 degrees.

In Belarus, as a whole, the frequency of hot days is increasing, that is, days with a maximum air temperature of plus 25 degrees and above. The number of days when the maximum air temperature reaches dangerous levels of 35 degrees and above is increasing.

“At the moment, the maximum air temperature for the territory of our country is plus 38.9 degrees and was noted during the intense heat wave of 2010,” the expert said.

Recent studies by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (an authoritative group of international experts) show that human-induced climate change is increasing the frequency of heatwaves and high air temperatures. For the European region and Belarus in particular, this is one of the most dangerous climatic phenomena, which leads to high mortality among the population, the expert noted.
