Climatologist Kokorin: the Doomsday glacier will melt in the next century

The Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, also known as the Doomsday Glacier, will melt in the next century. This will lead to a rise in the water level in the world’s oceans by three meters, said climatologist Alexei Kokorin.

The fact that the glacier is melting due to rising water temperatures was previously written by the scientific journal Nature. However, Kokorin believes that the rise in water levels will not happen this century.

“Of course, this is not the 21st century. In the 22nd century, the melting of the western Antarctic ice shelves, there are a lot of them, can raise the level of the World Ocean by three meters,” he said.

The expert added that under the worst-case scenario, the level of water rise could reach five meters. He also believes that if all countries achieve carbon neutrality before the end of the 21st century, then global warming can be stopped at a level of about 2-2.5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era. This will reduce the rate of glacier melt.
