Cloudflare, a leading internet infrastructure provider, is currently addressing an issue impacting its widely-used 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver, resulting in reported internet slowdowns and website accessibility problems for a segment of users.
The company first detected the problem at 22:13 UTC on Thursday, November 2, 2023, and initiated a fix within minutes. According to a company release, the disruption is isolated to users who specifically utilize the 1.1.1.1 DNS service. Cloudflare’s Gateway and Authoritative DNS services remain fully operational.
Reports of website and service outages began surfacing rapidly on platforms like DownDetector, with many users initially unaware that the root cause lay within Cloudflare’s infrastructure. A significant spike in outage reports was observed across numerous websites and services in the last 30 minutes, though accessibility should not be affected for those not relying on Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS.
Users of the affected DNS resolver may experience difficulties loading websites or significantly slower page load times until the issue is fully resolved. Cloudflare is actively providing updates on its official status page, and anticipates a return to normal service shortly.
“The issue is limited to users of 1.1.1.1, and we are working to restore full functionality as quickly as possible,” a senior official stated.
