The Club World Cup is the brainchild of FIFA and Gianni Infantino’s new money toy. As reported by İdman.biz with reference to the “Championship”, the tournament was expanded to 32 teams in order to bring it as close as possible to the main world tournament for national teams: the FIFA president is promoting the updated competition as “the pinnacle of elite professional football.” For club coaches, another tournament is a new headache, for the organization it is a way to earn more.
Gianni Infantino, FIFA President: “The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will be an important milestone in providing clubs from all confederations with the right stage on which to shine at the highest level. This will be an open, merit-based competition that will play a key role in our efforts to make football truly global.”
The tournament will be held in the USA as a rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup and will last a month. The rights to show matches will most likely be acquired by Apple TV – according to media reports, the deal will be worth about $1 billion. Colossal money for a tournament that, as is already known, many top European teams will not be able to attend.
Since there will be no qualifying tournament, FIFA has set the criteria according to which qualification for the Club World Cup will take place. For the calculation, the performance indicators of clubs of all confederations in continental championships in a four-year cycle (that is, from 2021) are indicated. The winners receive tickets automatically, but the rest will be selected according to the continental ranking.
For all except European teams, points are awarded as follows:
3 points for progress at each stage of the tournament;
1 point for a draw;
3 points for a win.
For Europe, only results in the Champions League will be taken into account, and the calculation methodology is as follows:
1 point for moving to each subsequent stage;
5 points for reaching the 1/8 finals;
4 points for reaching the group stage;
1 point for a draw;
2 points for a win.
Important criterion: there can be a maximum of two teams from one country. An exception is if more than two Champions League winners from the same country are identified during the four-year qualifying cycle.
It is now known that neither Barcelona, nor Liverpool, nor Manchester United, nor Arsenal, nor Milan will travel to the USA next summer. Al-Nasr, along with Cristiano Ronaldo, too. Inter Miami with Lionel Messi is still in doubt.
The big party has lost its main performers – and it will be very interesting to see how this affects fans’ interest in the tournament. There is a risk that the pinnacle of world football will turn into a regular pre-season competition, which most fans will also find inconvenient to watch due to the time difference. Arsene Wenger, of course, thinks differently: “The positive impact this will have on clubs will be huge because it will increase the resources of clubs around the world to develop and compete.”

Previously, one spot was reserved for the winner of this year’s Champions League, but all four teams that reached the semi-finals had already qualified for the tournament, so the spot had to be reallocated. It went to the club that showed the best results in four years in the Champions League among those who had not yet qualified.
So Salzburg ended up on the list of participants. Arsenal had a chance to become the third team from England if the club had won the Champions League, but Bayern knocked out Arteta’s team in the quarter-finals. “Salzburg” took 18th place in the odds table, but got through due to the fact that other teams like “Napoli”, “Seville”, “Milan” and “Liverpool” did not qualify under the “one country – two teams” rule.
Atlético Madrid and Barcelona competed for the place from Spain. Both La Liga clubs were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, but Atlético Madrid’s four-year coefficient is higher than Barca’s. And instead of Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig could have been in the tournament, but the club was eliminated from the Champions League. If he had stayed, he would still have needed to reach the semi-finals to overtake the Dortmund team in the rankings.
