Cofepris authorizes 10,000 procedures in the first semester of 2023

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) is one of the most important institutions in our country. Its maximum objective is to care for and protect the health of Mexicans. In addition, it has had to adapt to external circumstances such as taking advantage of technology and digital tools.

Procedures authorized during 2023

As part of his recent work, he announced that he increased the number of import permits for quality products and supplies without health risks by 18 percent in the first half of this year, compared to the same period in 2022. The result is a positive impact on the country’s economy.

through the Single Window for Mexican Foreign Trade (VUCEM)a comprehensive service platform that facilitates compliance with Non-Tariff Regulations and Restrictions (RRNA), which simplifies and enhances foreign trade paperwork operations, this health authority issued a total of 10,127 permits in the following categories:

Sanitary permit to import medicines for special treatments (in low-incidence diseases with social repercussions). Sanitary permit prior to importing products. Sanitary permit to import sample products or personal consumption. Prior sanitary import permit for return of products. Sanitary permit for the importation of supplies that are not or do not contain narcotic or psychotropic drugs, by return.

From January to June 2023, the authorizations of sanitary permits for the importation of medicines with sanitary registration increased by 16 percent.

In addition, the authorization of sanitary permits to import medical devices that have a sanitary registry and/or import radiation sources increased 22 percent, compared to the same period of the previous year.

Importance of Cofepris’ work

Cofepris was born in 2001 and from the beginning it was established that it would be a decentralized administrative body of the Ministry of Health (SSa), with technical, administrative and operational autonomy. Its main task is to be the governing body in the field of health control and regulation throughout the country.

According to current calculations, Cofepris regulates 44 cents of every peso spent by households in Mexico. The figure is obtained through three sectors that it regulates: food, beverages and tobacco; health care articles; and personal care items.
