The Official College of Pharmacists of Madrid (COFM) and the Red Cross concluded a successful Open Day blood drive this Thursday, bolstering the region’s vital blood supply. The event, held at the COFM headquarters, aimed to encourage blood donation among members, employees, and the wider community, offering a crucial lifeline to those in need.
A Commitment to Community Health
This year’s drive builds on the success of last year’s initiative, demonstrating the COFM’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility. For four hours, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., approximately thirty individuals visited the Colegio facilities, located at Calle Santa Engracia, 31, to donate blood. Organizers estimate that the collective effort will positively impact the health of more than 70 patients.
Industry Leaders Show Support
The event drew participation from key figures within the pharmaceutical sector, including There’s Oliver, president of the Association of Pharmacy Entrepreneurs of Madrid (Adefarma) and president-elect of the Business Federation of Spanish Pharmacists (FEFE). Their presence underscored the industry’s dedication to public health initiatives.
“Social Action constitutes one of the great driving forces of the College,” stated a senior official. “This activity represents an excellent opportunity to reinforce the health and social commitment of the profession and to get closer to citizens, with the desire to turn the College into a health reference in the Community.”
The Lifesaving Impact of Donation
The importance of consistent blood donation was a central theme throughout the day. A COFM vice president emphasized that donating blood is a “voluntary and altruistic act that can have a decisive impact on the lives of many people,” adding that maintaining sufficient reserves is “essential to respond to health emergencies.”
Another representative from the College’s Pharmacy Office Holders highlighted the crucial role pharmacists play in promoting public health, including educating citizens about the importance of blood donation. “Promoting campaigns like this is essential to raise awareness about a reality that requires the involvement of everyone,” they noted. “From the College, as an open, plural and committed institution, we will continue working to collaborate with those charitable causes that help improve the health of the population.”
Urgent Need for Continued Donations
The Red Cross reinforced the ongoing need for donations, noting through its website that “every day 900 donations are needed to cover the needs of patients in our community.” The organization emphasized the profound impact of each donation, stating that “Your gesture counts, your blood saves and your generosity makes a difference,” and that “each blood donation saves three lives.”
This collaborative effort between the COFM and the Red Cross serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to support public health and ensure a stable blood supply for those who rely on it.
