Coldplay, U2 & Ed Sheeran: Top Touring Acts of the 21st Century

Coldplay Leads Ranking of Top Touring Artists of the Millennium

A new ranking of the most popular touring artists based on ticket sales reveals a surprising leaderboard, with Coldplay taking the top spot. The analysis, conducted by Pollstar and released Monday, examined concert data from January 1, 2001, through the end of 2025, offering a comprehensive look at the evolving landscape of live music.

The global touring economy has experienced significant growth in recent years, with tours exceeding $1 billion in revenue becoming increasingly common. This trend was first established in 2023 by Taylor Swift’s groundbreaking Eras Tour, a feat recently matched by The Weeknd. But when considering sheer volume of tickets sold, the picture shifts.

The Top Five: A Look at Ticket Sales Leaders

According to Pollstar’s data, Coldplay has sold an impressive 24.8 million tickets over the past two decades. Following closely behind is U2, with 20.2 million tickets sold, and Ed Sheeran, with 19.6 million. Rounding out the top five are Dave Matthews Band, with nearly 19.6 million tickets, and Swift, who has moved roughly 18.9 million tickets – a remarkable achievement considering her debut album was released in 2006.

The data, pulled from reported and estimated box office figures, highlights the enduring appeal of these artists to audiences worldwide.

A Gender Imbalance on the Touring Charts

Despite the success of several female artists, the top 10 remains largely dominated by male performers. Swift stands alone as the only woman featured in the top tier. She is followed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Kenny Chesney, Metallica, Bon Jovi, and Elton John.

The disparity continues further down the list, with only four women appearing in the top 25: Pink at No. 11 (nearly 13 million tickets), Beyoncé at No. 13 (11.8 million tickets sold), and Madonna at No. 15 (almost 11 million tickets). This underscores the challenges female artists face in achieving comparable recognition in terms of ticket sales.

Gross Revenue vs. Ticket Sales: A Key Distinction

It’s crucial to note that ticket sales represent only one measure of success. While Coldplay leads in the number of tickets sold, other artists have generated significantly higher revenue. As one analyst noted, “Numbers of tickets sold is a different metric than money grossed.”

Swift, for example, has grossed over $3.1 billion in the new millennium, surpassing Coldplay’s nearly $2.5 billion. Her Eras Tour, which crossed the $1 billion mark in 2023, ultimately generated $2.2 billion across its nearly two-year run by December 2024, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing tour of all time. In September, Pollstar reported that Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour reached $1.39 billion in cumulative grosses, running from 2022 through 2025. Similarly, The Weeknd’s After Hours ‘Til Dawn Tour officially exceeded $1 billion in revenue, according to Live Nation, last month.

These figures demonstrate the increasing financial power of live music and the ability of certain artists to command premium ticket prices, ultimately driving substantial revenue. The evolving dynamics of the touring industry suggest that both ticket sales and gross revenue will continue to be key indicators of success for artists in the years to come.
