The Colombian agro-export sector celebrates the inaugural shipment of 13 tons of sugar mango to the United States, marking the beginning of a new era in the trade of this fruit.

The shipment, which complied with all national and international regulations for the marketing of fresh fruit, It departed from Santa Marta bound for the Port of Savannah, Georgia.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jhenifer Mojica, highlighted the joint work between her portfolio and the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) to support the entire process from planting to marketing. “This success demonstrates the commitment of the Government of President Gustavo Petro to supporting producers and companies in the Colombian agricultural sector, opening new business opportunities in international markets,” she stated.

The exported fruit comes from the Las Margaritas and Mi Cabañita farms, located in the department of Magdalena, both with the corresponding registrations with the ICA.. Both the packing plant and the exporting company are duly authorized and have demonstrated a commitment to quality and international standards.

Juan Fernando Roa, general manager of ICA, stressed that this milestone is part of the objectives of the Strategic Plan “ICA, closer to the field”, and not only benefits sugar mango producers in Magdalena and the Caribbean region, but also It also opens new doors to position other Colombian agricultural products in the US market.

During 2023, Colombia exported 211,824 kilograms of sugar mango by air. Between January and April of this year, the country has exported 105,809 kilograms of this fruit, reflecting constant growth in demand and national production capacity.

This is expected to be the first of many shipments of sugar mango by sea, adding to exports to the European Union and Middle Eastern countries, consolidating Colombia as an important player in the global fresh fruit market.
