Exploring Columbus: A Local’s Guide to the Short North and Beyond
Table of Contents
Meta Description: Discover the best of Columbus, Ohio, from trendy cafes like Qahwah House to fine dining at FYR, with a local’s insights into the Short North area.
A growing number of visitors are discovering the vibrant city of Columbus, Ohio, but for some, the appeal of this Midwestern hub remains largely unexplored. One such individual was Bryant, prompting a dedicated exploration of the city’s culinary scene and attractions, led by a seasoned Columbus resident.
A Strategic Stay in the Short North
The first order of business was securing accommodation. A stay near the Short North Arts District was paramount, but hotel prices proved prohibitive, with standard rooms starting well above $200 per night. The solution? An Airbnb. A perfect apartment was found just a five-minute walk from the heart of the Short North, offering a blend of affordability and convenience at $115 per night for a two-night stay. The apartment, while boasting an industrial aesthetic, proved clean, comfortable, and crucially, included parking – a significant benefit in the city.
Coffee and Jewelry in the Arts District
Arriving around 4 p.m., the initial plan involved settling into the Airbnb before dinner. The destination: Qahwah House, a Yemeni coffee shop gaining popularity on TikTok, with over 25 locations nationwide. The atmosphere was spacious and inviting, showcasing a tempting array of Yemeni pastries. While initially considering flavored matcha lattes, both visitors opted for the iced pistachio latte, accompanied by a “pistachio dream cake” – a delightful fruit tart with a crunchy pistachio base.
A leisurely walk along the Short North followed, revealing the charm of the area despite some Monday closures. A standout discovery was Red Giraffe Designs, a jewelry shop offering a curated selection of pieces. A gold rose ring for a pinky finger was quickly acquired, inspiring a return visit by Bryant, who purchased a leaf ring for himself. “I think he has pretty good taste!” the visitor remarked.
Fine Dining at FYR: A Second Impression
Dinner reservations were secured at FYR, a restaurant previously enjoyed and lauded for its exceptional cuisine. The goal was to provide Bryant with a memorable first experience of Columbus’s fine dining scene. Surprisingly, the restaurant was unusually empty for a Monday evening, a welcome circumstance for those preferring a quieter ambiance.
The menu offered an opportunity to revisit familiar favorites alongside new culinary adventures. To begin, both sampled mocktails – the Mexican-Americano (Mexican Coke, Martini & Rossi Vibrante, and lime) and the Spritz Free (Giffard NA Aperitif, Leitz 0.0 Sparkling Wine, and Sicilian Lemonade). While palates differed on the drink choices, the spirit-free spritz proved a refreshing reminder of past travels.
An amuse bouche of a chili butter-fried potato provided a spicy kick, demonstrating the chef’s playful approach. The wood-oven roasted mushrooms, served with a flavorful gremolata, were a shared appetizer, accompanied by toasted bread.
However, the main course presented a challenge. The salmon, unfortunately, was deemed inedible, described as overwhelmingly “fishy.” The attentive waiter promptly removed the dish from the bill and offered a replacement. Roasted cauliflower, a surprisingly enjoyable alternative, was selected. A chart comparing the price points of dishes at FYR would be beneficial here.
A Sweet Ending and Final Thoughts
Dessert offered redemption. FYR’s updated dessert menu was largely gluten-free, a welcome change for those with dietary restrictions. The “toasted coconut” – a coconut mousse with dark chocolate, banana ice cream, and pineapple rum compote – proved a delightful choice, praised for its balanced flavors and textural contrasts. Bryant opted for the PB&C, a decadent combination of brownie, chocolate custard, peanut cremeux, caramel, and peanut nougat.
Despite the salmon mishap, the overall experience at FYR was positive. The bill, adjusted for the removed dish and the choice of mocktails, was reasonable. The service was particularly noteworthy, with the waiter demonstrating attentiveness and a willingness to accommodate.
After dinner, a return to the Airbnb marked the end of a well-enjoyed first day in Columbus. The city’s blend of culinary delights, artistic charm, and welcoming atmosphere left a lasting impression.
