Amdavad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Marking a Century of Competition

Amdavad, India, has been officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a landmark decision announced amid celebrations in Glasgow on Wednesday. The selection signifies a major step for the city, which has pledged to “lay the foundation for the next 100 years” through hosting the centenary edition of the Games.

The city in western India was chosen by the Commonwealth Sport governing body, surpassing Abuja, Nigeria, following a comprehensive evaluation last month. This marks only the second time India will host the multi-sport event, following the 2010 Games in Delhi.

A Shift in Scale: Sports and Spectacle

The 2030 Games are projected to feature between 15 and 17 sports, a deliberate adjustment in scope compared to recent iterations. This represents an increase from the 10 sports planned for the reimagined Games in Glasgow next summer, but a decrease from the 19 sports showcased at the 2022 event in Birmingham.

Core sports including athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls, and weightlifting – alongside their Para-sport equivalents – will form the backbone of the competition. These will be complemented by artistic gymnastics, netball, and boxing. A senior official stated that the final sports program will be determined by December, with a diverse range of options under consideration.

Expanding the Sporting Horizon

Beyond the confirmed core sports, organizers are evaluating a broad spectrum of potential additions. These include archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon, and wrestling.

Notably, Amdavad will also have the opportunity to propose up to two new or traditional sports unique to the region, adding a distinct cultural flavor to the Games. The host city is planning to stage the event in October 2030, a strategic decision to mitigate potential weather challenges.

This selection underscores India’s growing prominence on the global sporting stage and its commitment to fostering athletic excellence. The 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad promise to be a celebration of sport, culture, and a bold vision for the future.
