Surgery for obesity is associated with a lower incidence of not only obesity-related cancers, but all cancers among women. It has been seen in a research published in the magazine «Obesity» which also found that cancer mortality was significantly lower among surgical patients compared to non-surgical patients.

Although population studies have established a positive association between body mass index and cancer incidence, it is less clear whether voluntary reduction of body weight reduces cancer risk because significant and sustained weight loss is difficult to achieve in large populations.

However, due to substantial and sustained weight loss after bariatric surgery, studies have reported a reduced incidence of cancer and lower cancer mortality in bariatric surgery patients compared with matched non-surgical subjects, according to the study authors.

“This research represents another study that strongly supports the long-term benefits of weight-loss surgery in cancer prevention,” said Ted D. Adams, of the University of Utah-Salt Lake City (USA) and author of the study.

The investigators compared cancer incidence and mortality stratified by obesity-related and non-obesity-related cancers, sex, cancer stage, and procedure.

Retrospectively (1982-2019), almost 22,000 patients who had undergone bariatric surgery were compared with obese people who did not undergo obesity surgery.

Participants were matched 1:1 for age, sex, and body mass index.

The results showed that the group treated by bariatric surgery had 25% lower risk of developing cancer compared to the no-surgery groupto. Bariatric surgery patients had a 41% lower risk of developing obesity-related cancers compared with non-operated women. The cancer risk for male bariatric surgery patients was not lower compared to male subjects who did not have surgery.

Research demonstrated a significant reduction in cancer risk for the following types of cancer: uterine, ovarian, colon, premenopausal breast, and postmenopausal breast. Death from cancer was 47% lower among bariatric surgery patients compared to non-operated women.

There was a significant reduction in the risk of uterine, ovarian, colon and breast cancer

“The important findings of this study are that the bariatric surgery results in lower incidence rates of colon cancer (previous studies have not been consistent). Furthermore, both premenopausal and postmenopausal women experience a reduced incidence of breast cancer after bariatric surgery, which may suggest that weight loss among women in either severely obese category may benefit from cancer reduction. breast,” says Adams.

“The work makes another important contribution to our understanding of the relationship between obesity and cancer,” says David B. Sarwer, of the temple universitywho did not participate in the investigation.

«The results of this study add to the literature indicating that the large weight loss seen with bariatric surgery reduces the risk of several types of cancer.. The risk of cancer in women, who account for the majority of people who have bariatric surgery, has been greatly reduced. People with obesity and their healthcare providers should seriously consider these benefits when considering the pros and cons of bariatric surgery,” adds Sarwer.
