Constitutional Court: the composition of the new mandate known

As the mandate of the members of the Constitutional Court comes to an end on June 5, 2023, the replacements of the seven wise men are now known. None of the former members was renewed.

It is a completely renewed Constitutional Court which will take office on June 6, 2023. While the mandate of the current Court expires on June 5, 2023, the institutions have already appointed their representatives. The list of new members of the Constitutional Court was made public by Serge Nonvignona former journalist working for the government’s communications department whose information often turns out to be accurate.

In accordance with the provisions of article 115 of the Constitution, the seven members of the Constitutional Court are appointed by the President of the Republic and by the office of the National Assembly. The first appoints three members and the second appoints four.

The list of seven new sages

First, the Constitution details that the Constitutional Court must include three magistrates with at least fifteen years’ experience, two of whom are appointed by the Bureau of the National Assembly and one by the President of the Republic. According to Serge Nonvignon, on behalf of the next term, these three people are as follows:

Next, the Constitution provides that two high-level jurists, professors or legal practitioners, with at least fifteen years’ experience, one of whom must be appointed by the office of the National Assembly and the other by the president of the Republic. The two nominated in this category are:

  • Professor Dorothée Cossou Sossa
  • Professor Dandi Gnamou

Finally, the high court must include two personalities of great professional reputation, one appointed by the office of the National Assembly and the other by the President of the Republic. The two personalities named in this category are:

  • Vincent Acakpo
  • Mathieu Adjovi

It should be noted that no member of the current mandate of the Constitutional Court has been renewed. Even if the Constitution provides that members are appointed for a five-year term renewable only once.
