The world is grappling with a worsening food crisis. The World Bank has acknowledged figures from the World Food Programme indicating that 349 million people across 79 countries were acutely food insecure in 2023. Since then, the situation has deteriorated, fueled by disruptions to supply chains, the escalating impacts of climate change, global financial instability, and ongoing conflicts in regions like Ukraine and Gaza. Food inflation remains stubbornly high, with “dozens of countries experiencing double-digit inflation,” according to the World Bank.

But there’s a glimmer of hope beneath the waves. Researchers at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama, along with colleagues from around the globe, have found that well-managed coral reefs hold the key to significantly increasing sustainable fishing yields. The study, published in a recent paper, estimates that restoring reefs could increase global yields by 50 percent, enough to meet the 226-gram-per-week seafood intake recommendations for an extra 1.4 million people each year.

The study emphasizes that locations with the greatest potential for increased yields often coincide with those experiencing the most severe food and micronutrient deficiencies, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities at hand.

Many coral reefs are currently depleted, with fish stocks falling below levels that allow for maximum sustainable production. To reverse this trend, the study indicates that fish biomass—the total mass of living organisms in a given area—needs to double. A complete and strictly enforced fishing ban could facilitate recovery in less than seven years. However, the researchers acknowledge the need to find alternative income sources for those who depend on coral reef fisheries for their livelihoods. Sustainable coral reef tourism is one potential avenue, with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) finding that limiting visitor numbers can protect coral ecosystems without negatively impacting tourism revenue—and may even benefit the industry in the long run.

Alternatively, if fishing continues at current levels while allowing fish populations to recover, it could take as long as 50 years to achieve the anticipated increase in food supply. The choice, it seems, is between short-term economic considerations and long-term food security.
